Bangkok Hotels
The Siam Kempinski Hotel
There's a rich selection of places to stay in Bangkok. Everything from the world's top rated hotel to cheap hostels can be found. In the "top rated" category, you'll find the Oriental Hotel, which is consistently ranked one of the world's finest hotels year after year. This 125 year old landmark is worth a visit, even if you're not staying there.
Bangkok hotels can be had in a wide range of prices, even for the same quality. Location usually has something to do with it. A business class hotel in the heart of the city will normally run $150 or more a night, but if you get just a little ways outside of the central areas you can get an equivalent class of hotel for $80 or even $60 a night.
As I note above, location has a lot to do with price, and as in so many things, location is really key to enjoying your stay in Bangkok. For first-time visitors, a riverside hotel is highly recommended. They put you close to many of the main sights, and in the "coolest" part of town. Alternatively, a hotel in the central 'Siam' area of Bangkok is also good, and costs a bit less. If you really need to stretch your budget, then consider getting a hotel that's a bit further away from the center of town. There are a number of budget hotels that are quite nice, yet within a short walk of the train system.

The word "boutique" is a rather fuzzy, often over-used, term that could mean many things. The list below comprises mostly small hotels that are a little different. You may fall in love them, and many have, or you might hate them. If you're not sure, read the on-line reviews by others before booking. You can also simply go to Agoda and get the best rates on any Bangkok hotel.
The riverside is a great location. Most major tourist sites in Bangkok are just a few steps away from the river, and after spending a hot day tramping around temples, the river really cools you off in the evening. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel The river is where you will find some of Bangkok's oldest, and posh-est hotels. The grand dame of these is the Mandarin Oriental (also known as just “The Oriental“ to us old-timers).
Baan Chart Hotel Here's a short list of hotels offering good rates for high quality rooms. Depending on exchange rates, these may cost you a bit more than $50, but they'll still give you good value for money. The locations may be a bit away from the center of things, but all of these selections are within a minute or two walk of the Skytrain or subway. You can also simply go to Agoda and get the best rates on any Bangkok hotel.

The “Siam” area is right in the middle of things. It's still the main shopping area of Bangkok, as well as a major transportation hub, where two of the city's rail lines cross. However, staying in this area doesn't mean you're stuck with tourist class hotels. You're spoiled for choice no matter what class of hotel you're looking for.
LiT Bangkok Hotel At the top end is the luxurious Siam Kempinski, along with the Grand Hyatt Erawan and the InterContinental.

Note: This review was originally written when this hotel was operating under the Tune Hotel brand. Red Planet, an investor in Tune and the actual owner of the hotel, later split from Tune and rebranded the hotel under its own name. All indications are that nothing else about the hotel other than the name has changed.
Tune just opened its first Bangkok hotel, which is just its third property in Thailand (the other two are in Pattaya and Hat Yai.
